Church was full on Christmas Eve, with all the extra chairs in use at the back of the nave.
As the service of traditional readings and carols progressed, music was played to accompany the Bible stories and additional pieces were added to further illustrate the extracts read. Kings College Choir sang Oh Come All Ye Faithful, Susan Boyle, Oh Holy Night, Arvo Part, Spiegel Im Spiegel, Libera, Sanctus, Angelis, Pie Jesu and many more. For every piece the church was bathed in light that changed through the spectrum and special lighting effects were added like the star for the Bethlehem readings and jewels for the wise men. Faye Hough again reduced some to tears as she lit the last candle on the Advent Crown, performing a full Italian curtsy as she approached.
There were many comments after the service, the most popular being “Moving, emotional, uplifting, inspirational and the perfect start to Christmas“.
The question asked most was “How do you top that next year?“
Thanks to John Headon, “PJ” and Haydn Gleave for putting it all together, to the readers and Faye for their participation and to all who attended, including the Messy Church families, making it the most special of services to celebrate Christ’s birth.
